Pathfinder 14, part 1 – And I was actually up to date, too

Well, I’m a week behind again.  No problem.  We’ll get back on schedule.  Y’know, eventually.

Everyone was present for this game.

  • Nox, Changeling Swordsage
  • Nonnie, Halfling Sorcerer
  • Reza, Dwarf Cleric
  • Thorbar, Dwarf Barbarian
  • Ristan, Half-Elf Bard
  • Eretri, Aasimar Warlock

This was a holiday weekend here in Canada.  May 19th was Victoria Day.  Since we play on Sundays, we decided to make this a long session, and we played from 2:00 until around 10:00 or 10:30.

After last session’s adventure in driving off a giant sea monster, the party headed up to Skull’s Crossing, the upstream dam, to investigate the cause of the flood, and attempt to open the floodgates to prevent further damage.

Now, Skull’s Crossing has been taken over by trolls.  Trolls are interesting creatures, which regenerate all but acid and fire damage.

Acid-based sorcerer, fire-based swordsage, giant-bane barbarian…

Yeah, they didn’t even stand a chance.

As such, it was a quick set of battles against an ettin, some ogres, and then some trolls to get into the control structure of the dam.  Inside, they find the control device (a magical scale model of the dam).  The dam has five huge skulls along its face which open and close according to the placement of the skulls on this model.  Unfortunately, it isn’t working at the moment.  Gems, stones, and coins are placed in the skulls’ open mouths, to no avail.

With one room left unexplored in the control structure, the party decides to check there, to see if there’s any help.  They enter the room.

To the right, a portcullis, behind which sits a glowing orange runic circle, a pile of crimson dust in the middle.

To the left, the same portcullis and glowing circle.  In this circle, however, is a withered creature, the size of a giant.

But it’s red… and has wings… and horns…

Holy fuck, it’s a Pit Fiend (devil)!

It looks to be dead, however, so Nox approaches.  (She’s an inquisitive one, sometimes.)  As she gets close, the devil stirs and reaches out to her, weakly asking for help.

In his weakened state, he is more than willing to answer questions, if they will agree to release him from his magical bonds.  He even gives them his name, Avaxial.  (Eretri, at this point, attempts to barter with me in order to use that name to bind and enslave the devil.  Yeah… I don’t think so.)  Before that, however, Reza generously casts a Restoration spell on him, removing a few bit of the energy drain.

As it turns out, the dam needs a body in each magic circle for the mechanism to draw power from.  It’s been pulling on the devil for a while, but his partner… expired a while ago.

With this, the group destroys a part of the runic circle, thus releasing Avaxial.  Thorbar reaches into his Bag of Tricks (such a fun item), and tosses a bear into one circle, and a rhino into the other.  Both of the animals howl in pain, as a grating sound is heard from outside.  The floodgates are open, and the impending disaster averted.

Part 2 will come soon, detailing the finale of Book 3.

You’re killing me! I stumbled up on your blog here a couple of weeks ago and I’m hooked. Now I check the site every other day for the updates.
GIVE ME MORE!!!

honestly though, keep up the great work. I really do eagerly look forward to reading about your group and find it very motivating on gearing up for my 4e campaign (only a few short weeks away).

Excellent. The plan is coming together… or something.

Thanks for the comment, and welcome to the site. I’m going to try to get at least two more posts up this week (session 14 part 2, session 15, and one more about 4e).

After this, I should be settled into my new work schedule, and I hope to get back to a regular schedule.

I am also in the midst of planning a site redesign, with a little help from a friend. I think that everyone here will enjoy it when it’s done.

Hey, don’t forget the flamestrike-wielding cleric! :P

A pit fiend servant? What would be a more fun way to royally screw players due to their own choice?
